The difference between a garnishing needle and an upholstery needle :

The eye of a garnishing needle is almost round and if you look at the needle from the side you can see the eye...you can see through it.

The eye of the upholstery needle is elongated and cannot be seen from the side, practically 45° inversely to the eye of the garnishing needle
